The first mine in Northern Québec to be supplied with LNG, Stornoway’s Renard diamond mine anticipated the energy future for remote regions. Since 2016, tanker trucks have delivered LNG from Énergir LSR plant to Montreal, located 1,040 kilometres from the mine. This efficient supply, combined with the mine’s installations, mean that large quantities of LNG can be stored on-site, enough for 8-10 days.
One year later, this efficient and safe solution has already proven its worth:
- A significant reduction in operating costs;
- A 42% decrease in GHG emissions by combining the natural gas with heat recovery processes;
- A substantial reduction nitrogen oxide (NOx) and sulphur dioxide (SOx) emissions, as well as fine particles.
